January's Scholar Athlete - Shane Miller

January 25, 2010

WBOC/Mountaire Scholar Athlete Award Winner for the Month of January

(Millsboro, DE) - WBOC and Mountaire Farms are proud to announce Shane Miller of Sussex Central High School in Georgetown, DE as this months WBOC/Mountaire Farms Scholar Athlete Award Winner.

From an early age Shane Miller knew he didn’t want to be like everyone else, average was just not an option. Since the age of nine he has worked hard to be a cut above the rest, honing his skills as a football player and wrestler, and studying hard to be a straight “A” student. Now in his senior year, all the hard work and dedication is paying off. The Captain of the Golden Knights Football and Wrestling teams also maintains a 4.0 GPA with a rigorous course load of honors and advanced placement classes. A chameleon of sorts, Shane plays the role of a beefed up quarterback/linebacker in the fall and a lean 152 pound wrestler in the winter. A feat requiring hard work and discipline, which Shane attributes to the drive instilled in him by his parents, teachers, and coaches who motivate him to compete at the highest levels on a daily basis.

“Competition is what drives me to be the best,” says Shane, “I don’t want to settle for average. I push myself everyday to be better than my classmates and my teammates. We all push one another to one-up each other.”

Carrying a 4.0 GPA with a full course load of honors and advanced placement courses, playing two sports, and doing volunteer work in the community might be enough to slow most teenagers, but Shane takes it all in stride…

“It can be tough sometimes,” Shane says, “But I find ways to make it work. School always comes first and sometimes I’ve got to wake up a little earlier, go to practice late or do more on weekends, but I make time to get it done.”

Ironically Miller, who inflicts pain on the football field and wrestling mat, is pursuing a career as a physical therapist, so he can one day help others deal with, and overcome, pain and injury. Something he says he enjoys more than anything.  Upon graduation this coming spring, Shane will set his sights on the University of Delaware and there highly regarded Physical Therapy program.

"Thanks to his dedication and inspiration; outstanding performance on the field of play, classroom academic prowess and as a leader mentoring classmates during hours of extracurricular activities, Shane Miller is our candidate to receive the January WBOC/MOUNTAIRE Scholar-Athlete of the Month Award.”  - Roger Marino, Mountaire Director of Community Relations.
