Jumbo Wing Eating Championship - 07.22.11

Inaugural Mountaire Jumbo Wing Eating Competition

Mark Dyer goes into overtime to claim the Inaugural Mountaire Wing Eating Championship, an instant classic, held at the Delaware State Fair on Friday, July 22nd.

Mountaire held its Inaugural Jumbo Wing Eating Contest on Friday, July 22nd inside the FREE Entertainment Tent at the Delaware State Fair and crowned the first Delaware State Jumbo Wing Eating Champion.  Mark Dyer of Camden, Delaware needed overtime, and a favorable judge’s ruling, to squeak out the win over a very game Lucas Messick of Milford, Delaware to claim the title and $200 in prize money.

Extreme heat and humidity didn’t create ideal face-stuffing conditions for the six competitors lined up across the Mountaire Wing Eating stage, but that didn’t stop any of them from going all out for the entire 12-minutes of jumbo wing eating action.  Broadcast LIVE on Delmarva’s Froggy 99.9 by morning show hosts Whiskey & Randy, the wing eating action got off to a fast start, but as the minutes ticked off it became obvious this was a two horse race.  Amazingly, after twelve full minutes both Dyer and Messick had consumed 20 jumbo wings each. So, a five minute overtime period was needed to determine our champion.

In overtime Dyer, unable to continue, through in the towel at the 2 minute mark, seemingly handing the victory to Messick.  However, as Messick stood to thank the judges he was unable to keep his wings down, breaking rule #1 of the competition and in a shocking twist, handed the title over to a dismayed Dyer!  In a show of good faith both men split the prize pot, which had escalated to a total of $300, right down the middle at $150 each.
