Chickin' Pickin' Championship

The Mountaire Chickin’ Pickin’ Championship is a contest of speed, skill and strategy to determine who can pick and shred the most meat from oven roasted Mountaire chicken(s) in a 5 minute time frame.  The 3 hour event features four preliminary heats and a championship round. Our 20 competitors have unlimited cooked 'birds available to them, off of which they must pick and shred all the meat and skin from the breast, thighs, legs, wings and back of the 5 lbs roasters, with the stipulation that new ‘birds cannot be started on until the first one is deemed completely picked to the bone by the contest judges.  All picked meat is then placed in a meat tray, which gets weighed at rounds end to determine who moves onto the finals for a chance to win $500 and the title of Mountaire Chickin’ Pickin’ Champion!

Hundreds brave the unbearable heat to witness Mountaire Chickin’ Pickin’ III at the Delaware State Fair

(Millsboro, DE -)  On Friday, July 23rd, the only thing hotter than Mother Nature was the fast hands of reigning Mountaire Chickin’ Pickin’ Champion, Charlene Jones-Kellam of Magnolia, DE.  As temperatures reached a paltry 100 degrees, hundreds of fans packed into the Free Entertainment Tent at the Delaware State Fair to enjoy Mountaire Chickin’ Pickin’ III.  Twenty five competitors, including local celebrities, competed for the $500 prize and title of Chickin’ Pickin’ Champ; but once again, current record holder and defending champion Jones-Kellam out-picked them all on her way to becoming the competitions first repeat champion.

Celebrity RowIn a new twist, round 1 was dubbed the Celebrity Round as local media personalities and State Fair representatives battled it out for the title of Celebrity Champion.  Participants included Petch, from the Eagle 97.7 morning show, Ashley James, WMDT News Anchor, Jeremy Tucker, WBOC News Reporter, Heather Moffett, Mrs. Harrington Pageant Winner, and many others.  The round was certainly eventful, but in the end, Ashley James of WMDT was the last one standing after picking a total of 7 lbs, outpacing her WBOC rival Jeremy Tucker by 12 ounces.

Rounds 2 through 5 determined our other 4 finalists with Charlene Jones-Kellam setting the bar with a round 2 weight of 9 lbs, 8 oz., a high for the day, but shy of her 12 lbs, 2 oz. record set at the June 19th DPI Chicken Festival event.  As many expected, the final round was a one women show as Jones-Kellam viciously tore through one chicken after another using her patented choke-slam technique to break free the extremities of each bird.  The only real question was who would take home 2nd and 3rd place.  In the time shortened finals, Jones-Kellam posted 7 lbs, 12 oz., Lupe Flores a member of Delaware State Fair staff posted 6 lbs, 4 oz., good enough for the silver belt buckle, and Celebrity Champ Ashley James posted a weight of 6 lbs to take home the bronze belt buckle.
