2011 Thanksgiving for Thousands
Mountaire Continues to Wage War on Hunger
The 2011 Wage War on Hunger effort helps the 17th Annual Thanksgiving for Thousands program feed over 45,000 Delmarva residents in need.
The 17th Annual Mountaire Thanksgiving for Thousands program wrapped up on Monday, November 21st, when volunteers from across the Delmarva Peninsula showed up in record numbers to help pack the 7,000 Thanksgiving meal boxes the program was set to produce this year. Beginning at 8:30am, people from all walks of life began arriving to start the assembly line packing process, all joyful in mood as they worked in unison to fill each box with cans of corn, peas, string beans, baked beans, yams and gravy; plus a box of stuffing mix and a plump Mountaire Roaster. Teachers bused in their school children to learn the value of volunteering, members of the Delaware American Legion Posts arrived in force to continue their support of the program and local residents, both young and old, employed and retired, all found themselves at Warehouse #4 in Selbyville, Delaware in the spirit of giving and community support.
By 1pm on Packing Day, nearly all 7,000 boxes were complete and loaded onto trailers, 800 bound for Hope and Life Outreach Ministries in Salisbury, MD and 5,800 destined for the Dagsboro Church of God in Dagsboro, DE. Remaining volunteers were then treated to a complimentary lunch from Em-Ings Chicken as a small thank you for their support.
On Tuesday, November 22nd, HALO and the Dagsboro Church of God dispersed each of the 7,000 meal boxes to local pantries, agencies and individual families in need.
